About Me
According to my mom, I knew I wanted to be a journalist when I was 10 years old (after I decided that astronaut or paleontologist wouldn't work out). My adolescent passion for reading and writing never ceased, and when the time came to select a major in college, I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do. In 2012, I graduated with a degree in print and multimedia journalism from Emerson College in Boston. During my time in Boston, I interned at the Improper Bostonian and Boston magazine.
Soon after graduating, I got a job in my hometown of Austin, Texas, as an editor at Austin Monthly and worked there until 2017. Currently, I am the managing editor at Texas Highways, the official travel magazine of Texas. When I'm not hitting the open road for work (or for play), I volunteer at GirlForward and hang out with my fiancé and cat. To keep my skills sharp and gain more experience, I've written freelance articles for PAPER and Alaska Beyond. I am open to taking on contract editing and writing work. If it sounds like I am a fit for a project, please reach out!
My Writing
I've had the opportunity to write about fascinating people, places, and businesses. Here are a few of my personal favorite clips.
“Mo Amer Extracts Humor from the Hardships of Growing up a Refugee in Texas”
I interviewed Houston comedian Mo Amer (of Ramy) for the January 2020 issue of Texas Highways. Amer has a fascinating life story, and he opened up to me about the struggles of his past and how they inform his work.
"IT Girls: Whitney Wolfe"
I had the opportunity to interview and profile the founder of online dating app Bumble, Whitney Wolfe. (PAPER, March 2016)
“Need to Recenter? Try the Silent Treatment”
For Texas Highways, I spent a weekend at an ashram in North Texas for a silent retreat. This was a story idea I pitched myself, and reporting it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience where I learned a lot about myself and about being open to new and unfamiliar experiences.
My Editing
I’m the kind of editor who thinks of myself as an editor first and a writer second. I love planning features and stories and working with different creatives on various components to create a beautiful, informative, and cohesive piece.
“Peeking Through the Pines”
It’s always a joy working with photographers on photo essays. This one on East Texas by Dave Shafer that appeared in the February 2020 issue of Texas Highways was a great opportunity to show off a wide range of work and get into the ethos of a mysterious region. This series was given an award by Communication Arts magazine.
“10 Classic Beach Eats of the Gulf Coast”
Putting together a service package is a big task for any editor, but it’s an enjoyable challenge. For Texas Highways’ June 2019 issue, I co-edited this feature on classic eats of the Gulf Coast. I worked with editors, writers, and photographers to give a more in-depth and soulful feel to what could have been a simple listicle. The result does justice to a fascinating part of Texas foodways.
“The Beginner’s Guide to Camping in Texas”
This feature, which appeared in the May 2019 issue of Texas Highways, really pushed me out of my comfort zone. First, it was a feature that I pitched and conceived of, then I reported it, wrote it, and edited it. I had to write about myself and my own experiences, which was a real challenge since personal essays are not my forte. This feature is a fun mix of essay and service, with sidebars on gear, campfire recipes, critters and insects, and more. It’s a trip seeing your vision come to life.
